I use both Shavlik and WSUS. Both places that I have managed to get Shavlik netChk Protect (%dayjob% and one %nightjob%) going I have found it useful to maintain WSUS for Windows-specific items.
WSUS is very low maintenance, handling Java, Adobe, etc takes additional work. Not sure if it's the tool or the operator (me) not being proficient with NetChk Protect (err, VMWare vCenter Protect Essentials now that VMWare bought Shavlik) to be able to do away with WSUS, but there ya go. Shavlik is not c dirt cheap, but it is effective.
