Hmm, sounds like it's not seeing the (virtual) disk controller. That usually means it lacks a device driver, same as with a Windows install. The odd part is virtual machine implementations usually pick a really common controller to emulate. If you try again, see if you can find a *nix command prompt. For the installers, you can usually find one on another virtual console. Press CTRL+ALT+F1, or F2, or F3, etc., to switch virtual consoles. Once you're there you can play around with the system, to see what the installer sees.
