The only bit I was having trouble with was a jabber client that would live in the system tray, would sign in using single-sign-on credentials of the logged in user, and didn't throw up an error if the client wasn't able to connect for whatever reason (i.e.: The user is a student, and doesn't have permission to connect to OpenFire). I last tried this a few years ago, so I don't know if this is possible now. I have never even looked at Lync. Being Microsoft, I would imagine it integrates with windows quite well.
