Apart from the sleep issue (and I realize this is an old thread), I'm not sure I agree with Mr. Desmond... PCNS likely acts as an "always okay" password filter, but PES's job is to yank password hashes out of LSA on-demand, encrypt them symmetrically with an application key, and transmit to the client (probably ADMT).
