So I can't even migrate from a Dell PE 850 to the current gen of that
class of hardware from Dell? If true, that's incredibly unfortunate.
Is the install serialized in some fashion (MAC address, BIOS serial
number, CPU serial number, System Tag, something else)?

detection (a BIOS string?), which means that the generic hardware
presented by the VM host will fail the probe by the VM guest. So it
won't surprise me that I can't P2V it, even if the VM host is running
on the original hardware.

Since it's the only DC, a cold P2V with a boot disk shouldn't prove
problematic. A hot P2V on a DC gives me the shudders.

Depending on the answer to the hardware question above, I'll probably
start by recommending a new server with ESXi and a swing migration to
SBS 2011.

One of the factors in play here is that he's got an accounting package
and a property management package on the server currently, and he
wants an internal (that is, not exposed to his customers) ticketing
system running as well. Between MSSQL, Pervasive and MySQL, plus
Exchange, it's getting to be a bit much for one 32bit OS to take on,
even if the office is only staffed with a max of 4 people at a time. I
want to set up a secondary DC and run the non-MSFT software on it,
leaving the actual SBS machine relatively pristine.

OTOH, since it looks as if SBS 2011 is 64bit, I suppose I could
(depending on the 3rd party software) pump up the memory and keep it
all on the same server.

I'd still like to virtualize it though - just makes sense to me.
