All,

I'm just now trying to set up the first of my new VMware 5.0 servers
to talk to an HP switch over a trunk - what is known in the Cisco
world as an Etherchannel - and it's not working as expected. I'm
trying to set it up as tagged in a VLAN at the same time, but I don't
think that's the problem, though I could well be wrong. The switch is
a 3400cl, the server is a PE 620 with four ports on the motherboard
and a quad-port NIC added in - I'm using the motherboard ports for
this exercise.

I have a feeling I'm overlooking something incredibly obvious, but
just cannot see it.

I can tag all four of the ports to the vlan, and it works. But, as
soon as I collect the switch ports into a trunk, following the
directions here:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004048

I lose connectivity to the server - can't ping the server from the
console of the switch, nor anywhere else.

Here are the configuration steps I've taken.

o- On the server console, I've set up the IP address and added it to
VLAN 110, using the four NIC ports on the motherboard, vmnic0-vmic3
and connect up the patch cables in switch ports 17-20. I also set up
the DG and DNS servers and host name.

o- On the switch, if I do the following, I get connectivity:

     conf t
     vlan 110
     tagged 17-20
     exit
     exit

At this point, I can ping the server from the console. Good news.
However, then I issue the following, and can't ping any more:

     conf t
     trunk 17-20 trk1 trunk
     vlan 110
     tagged trk1
     exit
     exit

I also made sure that the trunk was not untagged in vlan 1, which made
no difference.

I then undid the trunk with

     no trunk 17-20

went back to the article linked above, and set up NIC teaming with IP
HASH and made sure that all four NICs were active, then tried setting
up the trunk again, and again had no success.

Does anyone have thoughts regarding what I might be missing?

Kurt
