We use software to deliver the tweaks tailored to the form factor. Its fairly
expensive but does the job if you can justify it. The users find it invaluable
as the desktop/apps basically self-configure to the device connecting.

You bring up a good point. I've offered VDI access from tablets to some power
users and it has it's drawbacks. But with windows 8 being more tailored to
that kind of an interface it may be much more usable for a tablet user
connecting up. Although the biggest complaints I've had so far is screen
resolution, not general functionality. Just not enough desktop to work with.

I've done some work recently where we delivered customized VDI with various
tweaks based around the connecting device, with subtle differences dependent on
whether its a tablet, laptop or traditional thin client device. It seemed to
work pretty satisfactorily.

I took notice of the term "cycle". We went through a cycle using Citrix and
thin client in the corporate office. First we were going to have most
everybody on thin client. Then the execs wanted everyone to move back to
workstations. Then they wanted just one area on thin client. Now everyone has
a workstation again. We'll probably come back to a thin client move again.
I'm watching the iP* devices. I figure we'll eventually get to the point where
we'll probably run Citrix or something like that on iP* (but Citrix is
EXPENSIVE). But I think those devices will need to incorporate better local
storage and better user interfaces before they will take over workstations in
the corporate offices.

Subject: Death of the Desktops?

There are a number of pundits pushing the notion that desktop computing is
facing certain death, and especially for desktop computers as we've known them
up to now. Indeed, there are more portable offerings available than desktop
machine options, but with a higher price/performance/feature ratio. I'm not
sure I buy it, especially for many business environments where access to legacy
apps is critical. But it does give me something to consider as we face our
annual equipment refresh cycle.

What are your thoughts?
