Stand-alone works just fine - except without central management. You'll need to be careful with servers, but for desktops it's just fine.

But it looks like I can install the client as a "Stand alone" and get much of the same benefit I was getting from a competing product... for "free." Now I continue to look at SCCM and what it requires. 16 Gigs for only 200 computers?
