I just used the USB install on my 64-bit Vista machine (Dell E521). It installed fine, but it's now being finicky as all hell. Sometimes' it'll boot fine, other times it'll stick at a weird pixelated screen. Said machine was slow with Vista, so now I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem or what. Still troubleshooting, but at least the pre-boot F8 still works....
I suspect video driver (just the way the screen pixelates), I have a GeForce GT220 instead of the OEM on-board Dell, plus an add-in 1GBe card and SB Audigy, but the preflight Win8 check didn't indicate any of those were an issue. Time to pull out all the extra's and see what's up...
