AFAIK, its enabled by volume only, an architectural requirement I guess if
you will...

<VBG> Why are your VM's on the same volume as a file share (Or same server)
:)

I have file shares on the host machine that users access and would like to
give them the ability to use VSS to restore their files, I dont really want
VSS to touch the guest machine actually. Is there a way to have VSS run on
certain folders instead of the whole volume?

That's natively supported by vmware-cmd, that comes with vmserver, you don't
need anything else.

Good idea to keep downtime low...

Dig back in the archives on this list, there are some utilities that can
suspend a vm for a minute or two allowing a vss backup to work.

You can't reliably snap a virtual HD while windows is running. If you
restored to it, when you boot windows it will come up from an
inconsistent state as if the power cord had been pulled from a physical
computer. You can do it, but a safe approach would be to enable snaps
manually only, and make sure the VM's are off when you do it at which
point i/o is obviously quiesced in the guest (of course) and not high in
the host (no guests running) so the snap would happen rather quickly.

YMMV,

If I run VSS on a volume that contains a VM Ware server, will it cause
me problems? Will the virtual server be unresponsive while the VSS
service is looking at it? Is it a bad idea to run VSS on a volume with
a virtual server? An inquiring mind wants to know.

 Thanks,

 James
