Whitebox server. J

I build the servers used for our video deployments. It consists of an Intel
server class motherboard and CPU, 1GB RAM, Seagate SV series hard drives and
collects data from 10 cameras. A better video card could be used but I have
never needed to do so.

It use to run on Windows XP but was upgraded to Server 2003. The server
hardware was spec'ed as a server since I knew it would eventually be used
for more. It was upgraded for a LOB app that four people needed to use. It
needed to SQL 2005. It just hums along.

The monitoring software runs on a desktop so I'm not exactly sure why you
are worried about the server's video specs.

I know whitebox units get a less than stellar recommendation on the list
most of the time but it really comes down to how the computer is supported.
Just look at the thread about Lenovo. I've been building computers
officially since 1992 locally and have had very few problems. As we move
into more managed services and standardization, I use it as a selling point
that the computers are local built and serviced by me. Not some other place.
To the business owner, it's about managing risk and what is their comfort
level.

Subject: Axis Hardware Reco

What are all you Axis guys using for rack style servers? The hardware reco's
suggest a video card that is better then what most server style machines
have. Given my only experience with DVR's has been with different software
that had very high graphics requirements and wouldn't even work on any
server class hardware that couldn't be provisioned with an additional video
card I am skeptical to get something untested.

I would rather not build some whitebox unit and was hoping to go with
something more reliable!

Thanks,
jlc
