Just started at a not-for-profit organization that are switching to a
virtualized (VMWare) Citrix environment. I have been tasked to find a way of
monitoring the servers and network, and it has to be Windows-based (don’t
know why), so Nagios is out.

I was just wondering what are the best products for monitoring VMWare
environments, beyond simply adding agents to guest machines, as I am
interested in monitoring the actual performance and integration of the guest
machines with the underlying ESX server. There seem to be several management
packs/connectors for SCOM and SCE that threaten to do this sort of thing
(such as eXc VMWare Management Pack, Quest Management eXtensions, and nWorks
VMWare Events MP), does anyone have any experience of these, or are there
other alternatives not using Operations Manager?

Also are things such as the HP Proliant Essentials Virtual Machine
Management Pack worth their salt? The features such as VMWare DRs based on
hardware failure alerts seem quite cool, but are they effective? Are there
any equivalents for Dell hardware (can’t seem to find any)?

TIA,

JR.
