FWIW, SCCM does a much better job of identifying software than SMS 2003
did. The Asset Intelligence reports seem to be a big step forward.

Hi,

we have pretty much used every SMS version ever made and it always ends
up that the system just collects dust at some point and get
disconnected.

The same happened to SMS 2003.

Now the helpdesk people have risen again from the dead and are asking if
it's possible to scan desktops and report on what software is installed
on them and maybe even if it's being used or not.

I'm not sure if I should give Systems Configuration Manager a try or
just look for a dedicated relatively inexpensive tool that does just
what they want.

Implementing SCM wouldn't cost me anything, its already part of our MS
Enterprise agreement.

Should I try SCM? Would it work OK on an ESX VM? (I know M$ won't
support it but performance wise, would that be an option?

regards

Osama Salah
