Silly me for thinking a service called Windows Activation Service (WAS)
would not have anything to do with Windows Activation.

My original thinking was since Server 2008 implements Volume License 2.0,
KMS and MAK I was thinking that WAS would be used to make sure only properly
licensed and activated computers could connect to the TS Gateway.

Turns out I was not the only one confused. I e-mailed several people I know
who are considered gurus with Terminal Server and/or Citrix and none of them
had even heard of WAS. Turns out WAS was added to Server 2008 in Beta 3.
In RTM it was renamed Windows Process Activation Service (WPAS). It took
several e-mails with the Terminal Server team to even find someone who knew
about WAS and WPAS.

Basically IIS 7 requires WPAS. Since TS Gateway requires IIS 7, WPAS is now
a required sub role service when TS Gateway is installed. The official MS
Server 2008 training class I was in this week had all the labs still based
on Beta 3. MS has never refreshed the labs with any RC version of Server
2008. This courseware is slated to be used through the end of April.

Thanks

Webster
