Yeah, the 4100 series (and 2600, 2610, and 2800) series will do layer 3,
but HP calls 'em basic L3 switches.

What that means it is the basic L3 switches have limits with regards to
the size of routing table (16 static routes MAX), the number of VLANs it
will route between, the size of the ARP cache the routing engine uses
(128 MAC addresses), and have absolutely no support for dynamic routing
(RIP, OSFP, etc).

It's a night and day difference in capacity between a HP basic L3 switch
an a full L3 switch like a Cisco 3550, 3560, or 3750. A HP 2900 or
3400cl switch is more comparable to the Cisco, and even then the Cisco
has quite a few more features.
