Yes, popbeamer replaces the SBS pop3 connector (that is only in SBS) or is a 
pop connector for exchange in win2k or win2k3 . It allows to use IMF as well 
because it works with SMTP .
But if you need to retrieve mail from your exchange server with pop you need 
the pop3 service available native.

I'm not alone in that misinterpretation - others recommending POPBeamer and 
POPCon read it the same way.

I think you are thinking of the SBS POP3 Connector (that lets you pull down 
mail from another POP3 server into your SBS Exchange server). Exchange itself 
has its own POP3 /server/
