Yah I started small in my early twenties...figuring I'd have to pay my dues....first paid IT gig was in a school division at $24K, then the next year up to $25, then jumped ship to a VAR at $33 for two years, then jumped to another ship for $45K and after 7 years another $25 on top of that. Have a CNE5, a BA and BTh. But starting small and getting the experience paid off for me.
