Works fine in ESX, as long as the chip/BIOS are told to run in 64bit,
which is what I'm doing. ESX is in 64bit and all VM are 32bit.

Yes, you can.

I've done (using the Microsoft Virtualization products and Virtuozzo
from
SWSoft/Parallels, although I'm certain many other folks here can chime
in
about VMWare) a number of tests around performance.

My experience is that as long as you have hardware assisted
virtualization
(and aren't doing compute-intensive tasks) you are just fine
virtualizing a
32-bit OS under 64-bit hardware.

Subject: Noob Server Virtualization Question

As I mentioned in another thread, we'll be replacing several of our
end-of-life 2003 servers with 2008 this summer.

I've read that 2008 will be available in both 32- and 64-bit versions
(the last server OS to be available in a 32-bit version, according to
MS), and I want to 64. I'm concerned, though, about a few older apps we
have that be incompatible with 2008--particularly a 64-bit version.

I've read that one of 2008's strong points will be its built-in
virtualization abilities. I've played around with desktop OS
virtualization (I'm running an XP VM with Microsoft Virtual PC on my
Vista machine), but never virtual servers. So my question is this... On
a 64-bit Server 2008 machine, can I run a 32-bit Server 2003 virtual
server?
