My understanding has always been that the site links should reflect both the
physical topology and security of that physical topology. In other words, if
it's okay with you that any site's DC replicates with another site's DC AND it
is physically possible (no filtering going on to prevent it), then one link
could be fine.
If you want or need to control your replication traffic more, such as
configuring a hub and spoke topology, adding costs to different links, or if
there is something preventing certain DCs from communicating directly, you'll
want to set up more site links and limit them to include specific sites.

Right, sorry I may have been unclear. I do have separate sites in ADS&S, but
there is only a single site link, with all 4 sites in it. My question is
whether this is ok, or should there be a separate site link for each branch
office back to the central office.

One site and subnet per geographical location. The idea being AD compresses
traffic across site links, as well as computer/users on a subnet then know to
authenticate against a DC at the site/subnet instead of one across a WAN.

Anyone have suggestions for best practices for site links? My network consists
of a central office, and 3 branch offices, all connected through our ISP to
look and act as one network. We have DCs at each branch, and 2 DCs here at the
central office. Currently we have one site link, with all 4 sites listed in
it. Is this acceptable practice, or should there be a separate link for each
site back to the central site?
