Though, as long as I've remembeed, KDE has done great with its file copy
dialog statistic reports.  Considering that code is freely available, it
makes me wonder what Microsoft has been smoking/shooting/whatever.

You actually got it to display a estimated time!  I remember on SP0 that for
a file that size, it would take twice as long for it to estimate the copy
time, than to actually copy the damn thing...  Kinda makes you lose some
faith in the programmers.
 
However, I have a very happy camper with SP1.
