  660 GB (write then read 330 GB) in ten hours is 1.1 gigabytes per
minute.  That's easily possible with today's mid-range tape drives
(LTO, DLT, etc.).  You'll need good equipment, though -- if this is an
el cheapo server you might be in trouble.  A slow disk subsystem might
mean the server won't be able to push the data out to the tape drive
fast enough to keep the tape drive happy.

  Have you tried benchmarking the raw I/O performance of the USB
drive?  A lot of those USB attachments have really poor performance.
