I have some questions for you BUE users regarding synthetic backups.
I'm currently testing BUE 12.
First I'd like to know who actually leverages synthetic backups. The
concept sounds great but I'm having problems getting them to reliably
work on my larger file servers (over 500,000 files). This is scary
since I have several servers over 1 million files. The jobs will bomb
with an error V-79-57344-2307 "A timeout occurred in the messaging
involved in collecting additional information for synthetic backup."
Symantec's knowledge base tells me to rebuild the synthetic policy.
Since I am in demo mode I have the ADBO option installed so that's not
the issue. I did build the synthetic job through the policy wizard so
the settings for a synth job are set including "Collect additional info
for synthetic.."
Was this tweaked in 12 and would it be better in 11d?
Currently I don't have access to Symantec phone or email support. I've
been told by my inside sales rep that it is not offered even though I've
repeatedly told her that it's nonsense. She wants me to filter all
questions through her (a painfully slow process) or to use one of the
nearly useless VARs she's referred to me. I wouldn't even bother if I
though I could afford a full Commvault install. Their software is
complex but at least I have more confidence in it working.
