Then it would seem that the problem is with DVD Maker. Maybe there is an update
for it already?

  Burned fine with Nero.

Just tried again with Windows DVD Maker.

It seems to do this while it's encoding the DVD. not actually doing anything
with the drive yet.

  Any ideas?

Have you tried to burn a DVD successfully with another program? If you have
then I wouldn't think you would need to RMA the drive.

Have you verified the driver matches the hardware?

No IRQ conflict. Just checked that.

Nothing using the same parameters as far as I can tell.

Could be a bad DVD burner, but I don't have a spare machine with a SATA
hookup here to test that.

This is actually the first problem I've had with Vista. Granted Vista took
some getting used to, but so far, except for this problem, I like it. That's
just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

Any other ideas before I RMA this drive?

Some other device sharing the same parameters?

    Bad DVD Burner?

Because Vista is a POS? No flames please, I have a right to my opinion. J

All right, my Google-fu is failing me, so I'll kick this question to the
list. On Windows Vista. I'll wait for the groans to die out. when using Windows
DVD Maker, when I try to make a DVD, and it gets to the encoding stage, it gets
to about 3.?%, and Windows shuts down my machine. Completely powers off.
Immediately. No shutting down screen. No appcrash screen. No nothing, screen
goes black, power cuts off on machine. When rebooting, there's nothing
complaining about a disruptive shutdown, nor are there any logs from Windows
DVD Maker. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

DVD Burner is a SATA connected Philips SPD2415BD SuperAlwrite.
