I have recently read Joe Fox's thread on doing this with SBS 2003, and
it was very helpful. But I'm planning on doing this from SBS 2000 to
Windows Server 2008 and wondered if there were any extra issues I may
run into because of this difference. Based on what I've read here is my
high level plan. I'd appreciate any suggestions or tips from people who
have done this. Thanks:
Option # 1:
1. Prepare the forest

2. Prepare the domain:

3. Bring up a 2008 machine
4. Add 2008 machine to SBS 2000 domain as an additional domain
controller
5. Make the 2008 machine a GC server.
6. Change the preferred DNS address of the 2008 server to point to
itself. Change the preferred DNS address of SBS 2000 server to point to
the 2008 server.
7. Transfer the FSMO roles to the 2008 machine.
8. Wait for replication to take place. Give it a good 15 minutes,
depending upon the size of your network (wait for event 1119 or 1869 to
show in the Event Viewer Directory Service Log on the 2008 machine).
9. Remove the GC from SBS 2000 server.
10. DCPROMO the SBS server to remove it as a DC from the new domain.
