As a cost-cutting plan, the intention was to turn off A/C units at all the schools over the weekends. My argument was that 95 degrees was the absolute max, but that since we didn’t want to push our hardware to the max we should limit temps to 85 degrees max. Also, note that there are max humidity thresholds as well. Here in Florida, that was a concern for us, and another reason to not turn off the A/C units completely. And then there’s the fact that the hotter the servers get, the higher their fans run—and the more electricity they consume, somewhat offsetting the cost savings of having higher temps. There is no doubt in my mind that a server kept in a cool, dry environment will generally last longer than one kept in a hot, humid environment—even if that environment doesn’t technically exceeded the range the manufacturer allows. They point to Dell’s server specs which say their operating temperature is listed as 50 - 95deg F. A recent thread here talked about shutting down server rooms when the room becomes hot – does anyone have solid documentation I can point them to that recommends against a 90+ deg server room?
