I'm no expert, but I love VMs. >From my experience they import at the disk level. Some let you play with the partition sizes etc if you want to be brave, but most don't make it easy, and yes, for the most part, VM's require everything that their physical counterparts require. There are several apps that can do the import process. I use Shadowprotect with the Hardware Independent restore option for easy of use, and I use the VMware p2v tool for more reliability.
