Hmm...I didn't have a similar experience with the DS-500. Easy to
configure with w2k3, runs very fast. YMMV.

Cheers.

I have a Norco DS-1240 for some super non important data sliced out over
LVM with iSCSI on CentOS.
POS in every way. Tech support sucks, and they know it sucks, its not
worth the money.

Although supporting SATA II, the interference in the design of the
backplane is so bad, you have to jump the drives down to SATA I.
Certain features don't work in my "version" of hardware, so lame.

Stay away from that crappy company.

I've got two of these;

http://www.norcotek.com/DS-500.php

One with 5 - 750gb SATA drives, the other with 5 - 1TB SATA drives.
Comes with a 4channel PCI RAID card. Stomps it does.

Cheers.

The handle is surprisingly handy. No that I carry it around much, but
when I have taken it ouf of a bag to be placed near a system - its
been very nice!

The one annoying thing about the unit it the beeps it makes when it is
turned on. I beleive there is a button on the back for it, but I
haven't taken the time to look into it. I honestly dont know why the
chose the beep tone that they did.

But like you said, the price is right so I really have no complaints!
