The Cisco PIX is proudly compliant with RFC821. When I pointed out to our network team that the rest of the world was on RFC2821 then Cisco support said, oh, then you might want to disable it.
Using it can have several subtle and detrimental effects on your messaging infrastructure and no, our first edge servers were not Exchange but Tumbleweed and it screwed us up royally for a while.
