When initially creating the VM, I've selected the LSI Logic SCSI controller as suggested.
When installing the RHEL 4 O/S, I elected to let the installation select the appropriate hardware drivers for itself (in the past I've used 'linux expert noprobe' at the boot prompt and selected from the hardware list manually). Lo-n-behold, the installation has got past the disk partitioning and is actually installing from the CD.
