When initially creating the VM, I've selected the LSI Logic SCSI
controller
as suggested.

When installing the RHEL 4 O/S, I elected to let the installation select
the
appropriate hardware drivers for itself (in the past I've used 'linux
expert noprobe'
at the boot prompt and selected from the hardware list manually).

Lo-n-behold, the installation has got past the disk partitioning and is
actually
installing from the CD. Just need to wait and see if it'll boot once
finished!

VMware ESXi 3.5 On Dell 2550

I run a number of RHEL4 VMs on a couple of ESXi boxes.

RHEL4 needs the LSI Logic emulated SCSI controller and cannot use the
BusLogic.

If you told the VI client that it was a "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4" VM
when you created it it should have done that by default.
