SQL 2000 is not a supported database backend for WSUS 3.0. SQL 2005
Express and SQL 2008 Express are what MS lists as compatible.

Unless you're familiar with mixing different versions of SQL Server
should go with the Windows internal database. I usually put WSUS on a
"utility" server (backups, managed av, server monitoring, etc), and use
SQL Server 2005 Express.
