I just have to say... I've admin'ed DNS on both Windows and *nix. While keeping all the config in text files may mean a steeper learning curve and an unforgiving UI, they have two huge advantages: (1) You can put comments in them. (2) You can simply check them in and out of any source code revision control system. And *nix comes with the basic-but-workable RCS suite "in the box". At my last job, we had all the DNS zones in text files, and revision control and documentation was as easy as pie. You could, for example, add something like this: ; Alibre Network License Manager anlm.example.com. CNAME server2.example.com. And then do "ci example.com.zone" to check-in your changes, with a comment like "license server for new CAD system", or whatever. I think MS-DNS might be able to load zones from text files normally. (I know it can import them; I just don't know if can do that as part of normal startup.) You'd loose AD integration, though. Maybe Microsoft should add a "comments" field to registry entries. -- Ben ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~
