  I just have to say... I've admin'ed DNS on both Windows and *nix.
While keeping all the config in text files may mean a steeper learning
curve and an unforgiving UI, they have two huge advantages: (1) You
can put comments in them.  (2) You can simply check them in and out of
any source code revision control system.  And *nix comes with the
basic-but-workable RCS suite "in the box".

  At my last job, we had all the DNS zones in text files, and revision
control and documentation was as easy as pie.  You could, for example,
add something like this:

; Alibre Network License Manager
anlm.example.com.               CNAME           server2.example.com.

  And then do "ci example.com.zone" to check-in your changes, with a
comment like "license server for new CAD system", or whatever.

  I think MS-DNS might be able to load zones from text files normally.
 (I know it can import them; I just don't know if can do that as part
of normal startup.)  You'd loose AD integration, though.

  Maybe Microsoft should add a "comments" field to registry entries.
