  Historically, Windows SMB could never handle alias names properly.
They'd sort of work, but be unreliable.  Things may have improved with
2003 or 2008; my information is old.

  As others have suggested, I would use DFS for this kind of thing.
Indeed, I do just that.  "\\domain\Profiles\" is an DFS alias for
"\\MAGNUM\Profiles" here.  ("domain" being instead of the domain, but
"MAGNUM" being a server.)
