  Indeed.  It's always a good idea to follow a methodical approach.
Work step-by-step to identify what works, and isolate the trouble.

  However, that being said: From the original description, his mapped
drives don't immediately stop working.  They're okay for a little
while, and fall apart after a few minutes.  If he was loosing IP
connectivity, he'd loose that right away.

  Also, the default gateway will only matter if the domain controller
or other servers he's trying to reach are not on his local subnet.
(Which may be the case, of course; just thought it was worth
mentioning.)
