  Hmmm, a thought just occurred to me: Create a "dummy" service on
your GP management/editing computer, matching the service you want to
control, but not actually starting a real executable.  That should let
GPEDIT see the service and generate the GPO settings needed, in a
fully-supported way, without subjecting yourself to the full install
of unwanted software.

  I think Microsoft provided a tool that would let you turn any
executable into a service, that should be able to create the dummy
entry, I would think.

  If you need an actual executable to make the tools work, copy
WINVER.EXE or something to the name and location of the unwanted
software.
