My IT Manager is just that, a manager. I don't expect him to have the level of knowledge that I do as an Admin/Engineer. I always joke with him that his eyes glaze over when I start speaking technically to him. However, he has a great understanding of the fundamentals and oversees our inhouse software development and IT processes.
