iirc correctly, I think the e-series did away with alternate hardware profile for docked/undocked, if that helps drive your conquest for a solution... As for alternatives to control point... I think I am stuck using it since I have an internal Sprint Broadband card :( The old Dell software took about 2 clicks to connect, Control Point takes about 7. Oh, and get this. Dell's connection manager software does not support wi-fi yet. 'A release will be made soon'. Yeah... fail.
