If you mean he tried a repair install using an XP Home or Pro install CD,
that wouldn't be a good idea. Always repair using a CD from the same
edition of Windows. Don't have that CD? Then you can't repair install.

If an XP MCE install CD was used, then "the XP setup gives an error" is too
vague to offer any suggestions. Get the exact error message.

FYI there's a WinXP list here which has traditionally handled
home/soho/non-server/non-domain Windows questions. You might try following
up there, or post on the forums at thegreenbutton.com.

Subject: OT: laptop stuck in XP setup

I have a friend with a laptop that was having start up issues.
He tried to run XP setup after booting with an XP CD and perform a repair,
but the laptop is running media center.
The XP setup gives an error.
Now when the laptop is started it goes in to the XP setup and stops the
setup with an error.
Any ideas on how how to correct this without a format and reinstall?

Thanks!
