So I'm going through all the services installed by Vista SP1, in
order to disable all but needed services for a high-security
stand-alone computer. The documentation on this stuff is... somewhat
lacking. For example, the "Description" field for the "Function
Discovery Provider Host" service describes it as "Host process for
Function Discovery providers". Gee, thanks.

Then you have things like the TechNet documentation, with gems like,
"If the Diagnostic Policy service is not running, associated
diagnostics for problem detection, troubleshooting, and resolution for
Windows components will not run." So in other words, if you shut it
off, things that need it won't work.

Sheesh. Someone needs to tell Microsoft that there's more to
documentation than just stringing words together into something that's
grammatically correct.

One third-party's comment sums this situation up pretty well: "From
the sounds of that description, I don't think Microsoft knows what the
service does."

Not expecting a solution here. Just had to share. Happy Monday!
