All the docs I see say BITS works over idle bandwidth butif the Internet
Gateway Device (IGD) doest have UPnP turned on or does not support
GetTotalBytesSent and GetTotalBytesReceived counte then BITS uses the NIC
speed to determine what the bandwidth is.

I have NO clue how to find out that information.

I have a number of sites over a T1 (or greater) and I have not heard any
complaints about WSUS killing bandwidth. I thought BITS was supposed to work
during "idle" time, but from your experience I might be mistaken.

If you use Microsoft Configuration Manager you have more control. Some on the
SCCM list suggest IIS throttling is the way to go instead of BITS. I'm just
getting into it, but here's some detail:
http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/03/18/iis-7-0-bit-rate-throttling-module-released.aspx
Some interesting info here as well:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/updatemanagement/bb245853.aspx

I use SCCM but really I find WSUS just easier to use. SCCM provides
granularity but it takes time to configure the monthly patches.

Question about Microsoft BITS: If a machine is on a fast LAN link locally but
connected to a remote office via slow link, how does BITS determine network
bandwidth for throttling? IE remote office grabbing Windows Updates via WSUS
does the application using BITS do some end-to-end test?

My network guy is telling me WSUS updates for 17 Ps is killing T1 bandwidth
(we have VoIP on the same link). I know I can throttle BITS via GPO but would
like to know if I *need* to make the change or not.

Any links to MS articles on BITS would be helpful. I already found this one and
downloaded the Word doc:
