We combat that problem by using double opt-in (confirmed consent) and then we store the source of the sign up (web form, sweepstakes entry, etc) along with the date and include that in every email we send.
So it'll say something like "Andy Ognenoff, you subscribed on 5/26/09 as andyognenoff[at]gmail.com through our win a cruise sweepstakes."
