He had Win7 installed on it, and it booted from power button to useable desktop in about 20 seconds or so. Have no idea what he had as far as RAM or anything, other than it did have an Atom cpu. By the way Sherry, you make lots of typos no matter the size of the keyboard... ;) Joe Heaton Employment Training Panel From: Sherry Abercrombie [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, July 01, 2009 7:59 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: OT: Netbooks I have a personal netbook, Asus EEE PC. It came with their version of *nix, which I promptly overwrote with Ubuntu. I have not connected it to my work domain, but when I connected to my dmz, I can see the domain in networking. It wouldn't take much to be added to that domain I'm thinking. I chose a netbook that came with a 160GB harddrive rather than the solid state drives because those are just too small. Personally I love it, but probably my biggest complaint is the keyboard, it's very small and I have to be careful when typing on it because I do make a lot of typos. I have a corporate issued Dell Latitude laptop, so I'm accustomed to a laptop keyboard, but this is much smaller. Other than that, I don't have a complaint. I'm actually typing this response on my netbook. So it's very usable, and user friendly. Ubuntu is probably the easiest *nix distros out there. Recently went on vacation with my sister-in-law and niece (girls week out) and took my netbook. My s-i-l is a Windows XP user, and my niece is a Mac user, neither had any trouble using this netbook with Ubuntu on it. I do know someone that installed the Mac OSX on his Asus netbook and loves it. For the prices on these, they are really nice, especially for tight budgets. I would allow $$ for accessories like usb mouse and keyboard for your users, and if you want a monitor attached to it, it would have to be a usb monitor also. (At least for the Asus that I have). I liked what I saw and the price was very good but I could not get one in my hands to try out. I am waiting until I see some of these new types of machines before ordering any. Like your budget mine is super tight at the moment. Jon On Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 10:25 AM, John Hornbuckle <[email protected]> wrote: Anyone have any experiences on netbooks in the enterprise? We're a school district, and are just now looking at them. But the ones I'm seeing all come with Windows XP Home Edition, which presents manageability problems for us. Are we better off just waiting for Windows 7? My understanding is that all flavors of it will run on netbooks.
