If it’s possible to do so, I like the idea of fixing the shortcut targets better than using server aliases.
However, If you can’t fix them and want to try the alias route, you may have make some simple registry modifications to get it to work. I’ve had a similar circumstance and got through it successfully by disabling ‘strict name checking’ on the file server at ‘HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\DisableStrictNameChecking' and adding the old server names as aliases to ‘HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\OptionalNames’. A reboot is required to make these work IIRC. Dunno if this will work with your particular OS or the document management system. Good luck with it.
