i injected a commercial version of getDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/peb.htm)
into a peBuilder/UBCD and have used it many times to recover data after a
format.

it is pricy, but has easily paid for itself since i picked it up.

Take a UBCD4Windows disk with you, it has a lot of good stuff, i've used the
undelete software from it with good results.
In particular, Handy Recovery, Recuva & Restoration.

The UBCD and UBCD4windows should be in everyone's toolbox.

Activ@ Undelete is also very good, but a bit pricy for 1 job.

Can't remember if it was after a format or not, testdisk on the cd can be handy
to recover the partition table with good results.

But as always, YMMV.

Another good disc to have is Hiren's Boot CD, and before anyone has a go about
the legalities of it, I use the following guidlines:
1. If I need an application once or twice, don't care what the source is.
2. If I use it more than twice, I buy it.
3. If I use it once, but really like it, I'll buy it, within reasonable cost.
I consider Hiren to be more full version evaluation without limits.
All for home use and support of friends/family.

If something's needed for %dayjob% and they won't purchase it, it doesn't get
used.

Undelete

A friend of mine had her kids mess around with her computer. Her husband in
all his wisdom (he has a PhD) wiped the drive with a format before she could
remove her personal pictures (of the kids growing up). I will be attempting to
recover those files and am wondering if anyone can suggest the ultimate DOS
undelete tool. I have a couple in mind but want to be equipped with the best
tools before I get started.
Thanks
Steve
