Meh... I had ESXi running at home before we decided to go in on the
business.

At a cost of "free", and with the flexibility you get, I don't see why
you would NOT do it on a home net, unless you had some specific hardware
you needed that ESXi choked on.

And the home net _IS_ for play/non-work use. Music streaming, photo
library, home movie streaming, interweb access, IP phone service, online
Netflix/dish network, Exchange server, hobby mailing list servers,
etc...

Doesn't just about everybody have a home net these days? I'd only expect
the nerds like us here to actually run a domain and have an IIS server,
but we're also the audience that would likely then benefit from having a
virtual infrastructure too...

Last time I needed to move a server to a newer hardware platform it was
just a file copy.... mmmm....
