It's been a while since I tried it in AD passwords, with XP, 2000/2003
servers.  Maybe it wasn't Windows as such, but our password policy that
wouldn't allow it.

Are you sure?  Microsoft lists the asterisk as one of the recommended
special characters...

Was your issue with a specific application/version of Windows?  Maybe
they've fixed that issue.
