I've been to a handful of these types of events. It's really a hit or miss regarding the content and the presenters, but I don't expect much when I attend these as they are free.
The one for 2k8 I went to earlier this year was fairly good. Decent content and the presenter did not make me want to stick a pen in my eye. Went to one a few years back on one of their "bus tours" that was really neat, lots of hands on and got to play with the Xbox 360 (was either right before the release or right after). I can say that I have been to very disappointing MS events in the past. The one for Server 2008, Hyper-V and SQL 2008 was just plain awful.
