Well, in my *personal* opinion, the paid-for version of AVG antivirus does next to nothing against Trojans, etc. You have to have AVG Internet Security for that, apparently. I know for a fact that several Trojans have gotten onto machines on my network which have AVG Antivirus Network Edition (paid) installed. AVG *might* report that they are there, but does not remove them. I had to use MalwareBytes to remove several Trojans on machines "protected" by the paid-for verion of AVG Antivirus Network Edition. For that reason, I'm going to drop AVG when it expires and probably buy Vipre and install it instead.
My only complaints about Vipre at this point are 1) It never finishes a scan on my machine, despite the fact that I have 3 Gigs of RAM. HOWEVER, I don't hold that against Vipre, as my machine is both a client AND the server. I *do* hope that a true "server" class machine would finish the scan. 2)it does NOT uninstall AVG Network Edition, despite following the instructions given by Sunbelt. Now, #2 is not a huge issue for me, as I can lay hands on virtually all the machines that I will need to install Vipre on. It's only a /small/ hassle, but it would be nice if Vipre would do as advertised and truly uninstall AVG. :-) -----Original Message----- From: Carl Houseman [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 8:49 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: MSE is released... AVG Free is just as functional against Malware/Trojans as the paid version. There is no difference. The only things lacking in Free vs. paid is rootkit protection and additional scanning of web content. I can see wanting the rootkit protection if it's any good, the extra scanning of web content isn't worth much, since everything from the web that's going to do harm gets saved as a file first and is subject to realtime file scanning. Not to mention AVG Free does next to nothing for Malware/Trojans... for Antivirus, it's pretty good, but in my experience, while viruses *are* circulating, most of the bad stuff out there is a Trojan or other form of malware other than virus. -----Original Message----- From: Tim Vander Kooi [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 2:37 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: MSE is released... Agreed. I have been waiting for it since Win7 went RTM since OneCare will not install on Win7 and I am not a fan of AVG Free either. Not that it is bad, just that it is a hog. I suspect this will be looked at as part of the Win7 release and rollout - and in a similar fashion. AVG free on Win7 is still a hog. MSE runs quiet and there doesn't "appear" to be the performance issues that plague the other free offerings. -----Original Message----- From: Tim Vander Kooi [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 2:20 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: MSE is released... I agree. But given that reality, are companies really going to rush to push out this new release from Microsoft? I doubt it myself. Companies that are taking the free or nothing approach are already using AVG or some other free vendor, since upgrading (even to a free product) has inherent costs involved.
