I am not sure if there is some special licensing required, but we do this using VMWare Update Manager through VirtualCenter. VMWare Update Manager is a plugin to VirtualCenter. Obviously, if you do not have VirtualCenter, it is not an option, but the software indicated below looks to require VirtualCenter as well (based on an quick scan of the "quick start" document).
