System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 does that sort of business for me,
and a whole load of other stuff besides. Alerting is excellent, the
interface is nice and easy to use - however price may be an issue if you are
not a non-profit.

GFI do their Event Monitor product which I've used as well and is cheaper,
but I think SCOM is the mutt's nuts - YMMV
