Tell him thanks for me, I really enjoyed the YM experience. I wanted join the real service but someone smashed me over the head with a 2x4 right as I was in the recruiting process and the military didn't want me after that (had a bandage on my head for over 6 months). Too many problems with people claiming earlier injuries and getting out on disability or something to that affect.

Heh.

I know a Man who just stepped down from an adult leadership role in
YM. Vietnam era vet, etc. He was very regretful, but his health has
made the decision for him, unfortunately.

He's the one who taught me about 'ex' versus 'former', and he's the
older brother/uncle I never had while growing up, 8 years older than I
am - I met him in May of 1979, when I was just a young pup, but had
just moved on my own to Seattle, and we were instant friends. I don't
know how much longer he's going to last on this Earth, but I know I'll
miss him terribly when he's gone.

My thanks to Todd, BTW, for passing on the link. My friend simply
emailed me back: Semper Fi.

Fair enough, that's just what they used to tell me when I was in the Young

No, some Marines don't die in service. The rest, for the time that
they are alive, are usually referred to as "former".

Oh, yes there is - in the same sense as being an ex-parrot.

However, most living Marines call themselves "former"
